Kali Sikaran Wangara

Self-defence with Confidence

Kali Sikaran Australia

Kali Sikaran is a dynamic Filipino martial art that blends practical self-defence techniques with physical fitness. Rooted in the rich traditions of the Philippines, it combines weapon-based skills (sticks, knives, and improvised weapons) with empty-hand techniques, including Filipino boxing (Panantukan), kickboxing (Sikaran), and close-quarter combat (Kadena de Mano). Its emphasis on adaptability and flow makes it effective for real-world self-defense scenarios.

Curtis Waldie

Curtis has trained in martial arts for over 25 years, beginning his journey in 1992 with Karate. While his early exposure was brief, it sparked a lasting passion for martial arts that would shape his ongoing development as both a practitioner and instructor.

In 2000, Curtis began training full-time in Tae Kwon Do, where his long-term dedication culminated in achieving a 2nd Degree Black Belt in 2013. Alongside his personal training, Curtis developed a strong commitment to teaching, running his own Tae Kwon Do club from 2009 to 2015, where he gained extensive experience supporting and mentoring students across a range of abilities.

Curtis was introduced to Filipino Martial Arts in 2012, beginning his training in Kali Sikaran, which has since become his primary focus. His commitment to the art has taken him to train extensively both within Australia and internationally, seeking instruction from experienced practitioners to deepen his understanding and refine his skills. In 2023, Curtis achieved the rank of Madunong Guro (2nd Degree Black Belt) in Kali Sikaran and has been teaching as an instructor at the Wangara location since 2022.

In addition to Kali Sikaran, Curtis has continued his development within Filipino Martial Arts, training in Kombatan Arnis Presas Style and Kali Three Dimensional (Kali3D) — systems that share common roots and principles with Kali Sikaran. He holds the rank of Lakan Dalawa (2nd Degree Black Belt) in both styles, further strengthening his versatility and depth within the FMA framework.

As an instructor, Curtis brings a strong focus on personal growth, confidence, and empowerment. He values creating an encouraging training environment where students are supported to explore their potential, develop resilience, and apply the lessons of training beyond the dojo. His teaching emphasises adaptability, creativity, and self-discovery, helping students build practical self-defence skills while growing in confidence and capability both on and off the training floor.

Dan Farrall

Dan has trained in martial arts for over 30 years, beginning with early exposure to traditional Karate styles and Pencak Silat in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He commenced formal martial arts training in Albany in 1993, where he trained in Zen Do Kai Karate, earning his black belt before relocating to Perth in 1997 to continue his development.

In Perth, Dan continued his Zen Do Kai Karate training, achieving a 2nd Degree Black Belt, while also broadening his skillset through training and grading to a 1st Dan equivalent in Muay Thai, and studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to strengthen his ground-fighting foundations. At a time when MMA was still emerging, Dan’s training required seeking out multiple systems and instructors, building a practical and adaptable understanding of stand-up, ground, and transitional ranges.

This period included training in Shootfighting, further shaping an approach grounded in adaptability and functional application rather than reliance on a single system. It was also during this time that Dan was first introduced to Filipino Martial Arts, beginning with Modern Arnis.

Over time, Dan’s primary focus became Filipino Martial Arts, particularly Kali Sikaran, which he has now trained in for over 14 years. He holds the rank of Madunong Guro (2nd Degree Black Belt) in Kali Sikaran, and is also a Lakan Isa (1st Degree Black Belt) in Kombatan Arnis Presas Style and Kali3D, systems that share common roots and principles.

Dan continues to train and travel both nationally and internationally, seeking exposure to experienced instructors and training methodologies with a strong emphasis on practical application. He has been instructing Kali Sikaran at Shobukan Martial Arts (Wangara) for over six years.

As an instructor, Dan’s teaching reflects a lifetime of cross-training and learning across disciplines. His approach emphasises adaptability, respect for traditional systems, and practical self-defence skills across stand-up, ground, and transitional ranges. He focuses on creating a supportive, adult-focused training environment where students of all experience levels can build practical self-defence skills with confidence.
